BONNERS FERRY - The Bonners Ferry JV Badgers held on to a 12-0 halftime lead to edge the visiting Rocky Mountain Rams 12-7 Thursday night in Idaho.
After losing 40-0 to the Badgers in September, the Rams showed the substantial improvement they've made as a team by battling Bonners Ferry to the final whistle in their second meeting of the season. For the Rams, their third and final game of the season left no doubt that the future of football in Cranbrook is promising.
Unlike in their first matchup, the two teams played to a scoreless first quarter as both offences were able to generate first downs, but neither could sustain a long enough drive to find the endzone.
In the second quarter, Bonners Ferry broke the deadlock when their quarterback found his receiver on a crossing route in the endzone. Later in the quarter, the Badgers took advantage of good field position after a Rams fumble by scoring their second touchdown of the game when their quarterback scrambled 20 yards to the endzone on fourth down, sneaking just inside the pylon.
The third quarter looked much like the first with neither team able to string together long enough drives or spring loose for a game-changing play until Rams quarterback Connor McLeod busted loose for a 60-yard run up the middle to give the visiting side a jolt of momentum.
In the fourth, the Rams came up short on a pair of fourth down tries while the Badgers continued to use the clock and ensure they maintained the field position advantage. The Rams had the ball at their own 20-yard line with under a minute to go, but could not muster any miraculous game winning scores on their final possession.
The Rams finish their exhibition schedule 0-3 with a pair of losses in Bonners Ferry and one in Eureka. Despite not having a home-game this season the Rams will finish out their schedule at home with a Black & Gold 9-a-side Showcase as part of the Kootenay Football League's (NFL Flag) Kootenay Bowl in Cranbrook on Saturday, October 26. The scrimmage-style event will begin at 5 p.m. MT at Mount Baker Secondary in Cranbrook.
